Why hike the jungles of Tenerife?

One of the things that makes Tenerife so intriguing is its incredible diversity. Within a short drive, you can move from dry volcanic plains that feel almost extraterrestrial to lush, green, and almost mystical jungles. Hiking these forests as a group feels magical, like stepping into a Brothers Grimm story together. Few experiences bond a travel group more than wandering through what many call the Black Forest of Tenerife.

⏳ When to go jungle hiking in Tenerife

Morning to early afternoon is the best time to explore Tenerife's jungle trails. As daylight fades, visibility drops quickly, and forest paths can become slippery and difficult to navigate.

🗺 Where to go: Tenerife's best jungle hikes

The northeast of Tenerife is carpeted in dense greenery, but the most captivating area is Anaga Rural Park. This UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is home to the famous Bosque Encantado, the Enchanted Forest, known for its misty atmosphere, moss-covered trees, and ancient laurel forest.

🎒 What to pack for hiking in Tenerife's jungles

  • Warm layers -> Do not be fooled by the sunshine on the coast. In the humid forest, it gets damp and chilly.
  • Good shoes with grip -> Tree roots covered in moss can be as slippery as ice.
  • Water and snacks -> Forest hikes can be long and energy-sapping.

💡 Group hiking tip

Split into pairs and rotate walking partners every 15 minutes. It keeps the hike lively, boosts morale, and gives everyone time to connect with different people in the group.

✨ Final tip: plan beyond the jungle

Tenerife is a true hiker's paradise, offering thousands of trails, from misty cloud forests to coastal paths lined with cacti. In Anaga, you can dive deep into the jungle or move closer to the coast for drier terrain and sweeping sea views. Further west, near Los Gigantes, trails become more dramatic, with steep cliffs plunging into the ocean. These hikes are often more challenging, so always check trail difficulty and conditions before setting out.
