Even though autumn is slowly settling in, that does not mean weekend getaways are off the table. And what if we told you that just a few hours from Paris, there is a seaside gem where you can completely forget about back-to-back meetings and new semester deadlines?

Welcome to Île-de-Ré — a serene island off the French Atlantic coast, connected to the mainland by a graceful bridge from La Rochelle. With its long beaches, peaceful salt marshes, and postcard-perfect villages, Île-de-Ré is the ultimate destination for a relaxed, joyful weekend with friends.

🚲 Explore Île-de-Ré by Bike

Biking is hands down the best way to explore Île-de-Ré. The island boasts over 100 km of flat, scenic cycling paths, winding through salt fields, oyster farms, pine forests, and coastal dunes.

A classic route starts in Saint-Martin-de-Ré, a lively port town surrounded by Vauban-designed ramparts, a UNESCO World Heritage site. From there, cycle north toward Loix, where salt marshes shimmer under the sun. Still feeling energetic? Continue west to Ars-en-Ré and loop around the island's western tip for uninterrupted ocean views.

Local tip: Stop by La Martinière in Saint-Martin-de-Ré for a scoop of homemade ice cream before setting off. It is a local favorite and the perfect fuel for your ride.

🌊 Discover the Iconic Lighthouses of Île-de-Ré

Your bike route doubles as a hop-on, hop-off lighthouse tour. Île-de-Ré's lighthouses dot the coastline, each offering a unique perspective on the Atlantic.

Begin at Phare de la Flotte, continue to Phare Rouge de Saint-Martin, and finish at the iconic Phare des Baleines. Climb its 257 steps for a breathtaking panoramic view of the ocean and surrounding coastline.

Local tip: Visit around sunset. The golden light over the sea makes for unforgettable group photos.

🦪 Taste Oysters Straight from the Farm

No visit to Île-de-Ré is complete without tasting its world-famous oysters. The island is dotted with small oyster shacks, known as cabanes à huîtres, where you can enjoy oysters just meters from where they are grown.

Head to Rivedoux-Plage or La Couarde-sur-Mer for a tasting paired with a chilled glass of white wine. It is the perfect reward after a day of cycling.

Local tip: Visit in the late afternoon to see oyster farmers returning from their boats — many are happy to chat about their craft.

🌸 Last Little Treasures to Bring Home

Before heading back, pick up a small pouch of fleur de sel de l'Île-de-Ré, harvested from the island's salt marshes. It is one of the best edible souvenirs you can bring home.

If time allows, consider a short cruise from La Rochelle to admire the Pont de l'Île-de-Ré. At sunset, the bridge appears to float above the sea mist — a perfect final moment before returning to the city.
